What lip flip actually does

A few units of neurotoxin placed in the muscle that circles your mouth, right at the top lip. Relax that muscle slightly and the lip stops curling under — it rolls outward and shows more of the pink you already have. Nothing is added and no volume is created, which is exactly why it looks like nothing was done.

It is the smallest thing on this menu and the one most often mistaken for filler. If you want a genuinely fuller lip, that is filler; if your lip is fine but vanishes when you smile, this is the one.

This is the treatment providers most often talk people into instead of filler, not the other way round. If four units solves it, four units solves it.

What happens at your appointment

Look

Your provider watches you smile and talk. The lip flip works on a lip that tucks under when you move, so this is the part that decides whether it is right for you at all.

Inject

Four units, sometimes six, in two to four tiny placements along the top lip. No numbing needed for most people — it is over in about a minute.

Go

Back to your day immediately. No swelling to hide, which is the practical difference between this and filler.

No, and it is the most common mix-up we see. Filler adds volume with hyaluronic acid. A lip flip adds nothing — it relaxes the muscle so the lip you have rolls outward instead of tucking under. If you want a visibly fuller lip, you want filler. If your lip is a good size but hides when you smile, you want this.

Because it is a tiny dose in a muscle you use constantly. Four units in the most active muscle on your face wears off faster than twenty units in a forehead. Six to ten weeks is normal and not a sign anything went wrong.

Dosed properly, no. Overdosed, you can get a few days of feeling like straws and hard consonants take more effort. That is why the dose stays at four to six units — the temptation to go higher is exactly what causes it.

Yes, and a lot of people do — filler for the volume, a flip for the show of pink. Your provider will usually place the filler first and add the flip at a separate visit so it is clear what did what.

Often, yes. The same muscle that tucks the lip under also lifts it high enough to show gum. Your provider will tell you at the assessment whether yours is the kind that responds.
